Meet our New Anime-themed Pixelfed Instance, Usuzakura

January 7, 2023 by chikorita157

With Mastodon and the Fediverse growing, we decided to expand our offerings in our ecosystems of apps. With that, we have set up a Pixelfed instance focusing on Anime, Manga, video games, and Japanese culture. This instance is named Usuzakuraya (薄桜屋). 薄桜 means cherry blossom in a faint color, and 屋 means shop.

What is Pixelfed? It’s a piece of open-source software that allows users to set up their own Instagram-like decentralized social network. Pixelfed is primarily for sharing photos, and you can organize your photos with alums. Since Pixelfed uses ActivityPub, you can follow Pixelfed accounts with other Fediverse software like Mastodon, Misskey, Akkoma, etc. You can follow accounts from Mastodon, Misskey, and Akkoma on Pixelfed. Still, only posts with pictures will appear in the feed.

Note that our Pixelfed is slightly less strict in blocking instances (you can’t pre-block instances). Trolls are less likely to abuse it since it’s primarily for photo sharing. However, the rules against hate speech, extremist, and illegal content (e.g., lolicon, pedophilia, CSAM) still apply here. Instances will only get blocked depending on the number of strikes they receive against them when they don’t resolve a report against a bad actor correctly.

While Usuzakura primarily focuses on sharing anime-related pictures and photos like your anime figure/merch collection, your manga collection, and cosplay photos, you can post non-related pics as long as they don’t break the rules. Note there is no limit on how many pictures to store and share, except for an upload limit of 8 MB per picture.

Feel free to tell anyone about our Pixelfed instance. As always, it uses the same infrastructure as Sakurajima, so no additional costs are incurred. However, if you want to help us offset the costs, you can donate to us at Paypal · Ko-Fi · Patreon

Our Pixelfed instance can be accessed at https://usuzakuraya.us. You can get help at our Pixelfed support forums if you need support.
