At 3:15 PM Eastern Time to 5:43 PM ET, the main Mastodon and Misskey/Sharkey server went down due to a Denial of Service Attack.
Event Type: Intermittent Packet Loss
Start: 2024-04-18 15:15:00 Eastern
End: 2024-04-18 17:43:00 Eastern
Location(s): New York City Metro (NY1)
Client Affecting: Yes
Device(s):
utenaEvent Summary: A loop within our network caused intermittent packet loss. A network wide change has been applied to prevent these types of incidents in the future.
Since this is a Denial of Service attack, which is a type of cyberattack that an attacker prevents access from user’s accessing a resource, no data was lost.
Correction: This Denial of Service was caused by a network loop that eventually lead to a broadcast storm that took down the whole network, maybe due to a misconfiguration.
